Chickenpox, also spelled chicken pox, is the common name for Varicella simplex, classically one of the childhood infectious diseases caught chiken pox and survived by most children.
Chickenpox is caused by chicken poz the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as human herpes virus 3 chcken pox (HHV-3), one of the eight herpes viruses known to affect humans. It starts with conjunctival cicken pox and catarrhal symptoms, moderate fever and then characteristic spots appearing chocken pox in two or three waves, mainly on the body and head rather than the hands and becoming itchy raw pox chicken pix (pocks), small open sores which heal mostly without scarring.
Chickenpox has a two-week incubation period and chicken px is highly contagious by air chicken pos transmission two days before symptoms appear. Following primary infection there is usually chicken po lifelong protective immunity from further episodes of chickenpox. Recurrent chickenpox is fairly rare but more chicke pox likely in people with compromised immune systems.
Symptomatic treatment, with calamine lotion to ease itching chicken ox and paracetamol (known in the U.S. as acetaminophen) to reduce fever, is widely used.
Chickenpox is chichen pox rarely fatal (usually from varicella pneumonia), with pregnant women and those with depressed immune chicken pox systems being more at chicken pox vaccine risk. Pregnant women not known to be immune and who come into contact with chickenpox may need chicken pox symptoms urgent treatment as the virus can cause serious problems for symptoms of chicken pox the fetus.
Later in life, viruses remaining dormant in the nerves can reactivate causing localised eruptions of shingles. This occurs particularly in people with chicken pox pictures compromised immune systems, such as the elderly, and perhaps even those suffering sunburn. Unlike chickenpox chicken picture pox rash which normally fully settles, shingles may result in chicken pox signs symptoms persisting post-herpetic neuralgia pain.
A chickenpox vaccine has been available since 1995, and is now pictures of chicken pox required in some countries for children to be admitted into elementary school unless the parent/guardian submits an shingles chicken pox exemption. In addition, effective medications (e.g. aciclovir) are available to treating chicken pox scars treat chickenpox in healthy adults and chicken pox shingles vaccine immunocompromised persons.

Symptoms and signs
Chickenpox is highly infectious and spreads from person to person by direct contact chicken pox contagious or through the air from an infected person’s coughing chicken pox and pregnancy or sneezing. Touching the fluid from a chickenpox blister can also spread the disease. A person with chicken pox and shingles chickenpox is contagious 1–2 days before the rash appears and until all blisters have formed scabs. This may chicken pox rash take between 5–10 days. It takes from 10–21 chicken pox twice days after contact with an infected person for someone to develop chickenpox.
The chickenpox chicken pox vaccination lesions (blisters) start as a 2–4 mm red papule which develops chicken pox vaccineand vaccine type an irregular outline (rose petal). A thin-walled, clear vesicle (dew drop) chest pain in chicken pox develops on top of the area of chicken pox photo redness. This "dew drop on a rose petal" lesion is very characteristic for chickenpox. After about 8–12 hours the fluid in the vesicle gets cloudy what is the meaning of chicken pox and the vesicle breaks leaving a crust. The fluid is highly contagious, but chicken pox disease once the lesion crusts over, it is chicken pox infant not considered contagious. The crust usually falls off after 7 days sometimes leaving chicken pox lesions - pictures a crater-like scar. Although one lesion goes through this complete cycle in about 7 history of chicken pox days, another hallmark of chickenpox is the fact that new lesions crop up chicken pox blues every day for several days. Therefore, it may take about a week until new lesions stop appearing chicken pox shingles and existing lesions crust over. Children are not sent back fever chicken pox to school until all lesions have crusted over.
Second infections with chickenpox occur in immunocompetent individuals, but are uncommon. Such second infections are rarely severe. A soundly-based chicken pox - stages of rash conjecture being carefully assessed in countries chicken pox after vaccine with low prevalence of chickenpox due to immunisation, low birth chicken pox blister rates, and increased separation is that immunity has been reinforced by subclinical challenges and this is now less common. This is more chicken pox cure dangerous with shingles. There have been reported cases of repeat infections.
Congenital defects chicken pox images in babies
These may chicken pox in pregnancy occur if the child's mother was exposed to VZV during pregnancy. chicken pox information Effects to the fetus may be minimal in nature but physical deformities range in severity from under developed toes and fingers, to severe anal chicken pox vaccine and thrombocytopenia and bladder the chicken pox malformation. Possible problems include:
- Damage to brain: encephalitis, microcephaly, hydrocephaly, aplasia of brain
- Damage to the eye (optic stalk, optic chicken pox and egg cup, and lens vesicles), microphthalmia, cataracts, chorioretinitis, optic atrophy.
- Other neurological chicken pox immunization disorder: damage to cervical and lumbosacral spinal cord, motor/sensory deficits, absent deep tendon reflexes, anisocoria/Horner's chicken pox like rash syndrome
- Damage to body: hypoplasia of upper/lower extremities, anal and bladder sphincter dysfunction
- Skin disorders: zig chicken pox relief zag (cicatricial) skin lesions, hypopigmentation
Prognosis and treatment
Chickenpox infection tends to be milder the younger a chicken pox stages child is and symptomatic treatment for itch (e.g. calamine lotion and/or chicken pox symtoms antihistamines) and fever (with paracetamol or ibuprofen) is usually all that is required. Infection in otherwise healthy removing chicken pox marks adults tends to more severe and active treatment with signs of chicken pox antiviral drugs (e.g. aciclovir) is generally advised. Patients acyclovir chicken pox of any age with depressed immune systems or extensive eczema are at risk of more severe disease and chicken pox facts should also be treated with antiviral medication. In chicken pox mild case the U.S., 55 percent of chickenpox deaths were in the over-20 age group.
Screening and prevention
In the UK chicken pox pregnancy Varicella antibodies are measured as part of the routine of prenatal care, chicken pox symptoms pictures and by 2005 all NHS healthcare chicken pox treatment personnel had determined their immunity and been immunised if they were non-immune and have direct patient contact.
One history chicken poxes of medicine book credits Giovanni Filippo picture chicken pox (1510–1580) of Palermo with the first description of varicella (chickenpox). Subsequently in the 1600s, an English physician named Richard Morton picture of chicken pox described what he thought a mild side effects of chicken pox vaccine form of smallpox as "chicken pox." Later, in 1767, a physician named William Heberden, also from England, was the first treatment for chicken pox scars physician to clearly demonstrate that chickenpox was different from smallpox. bullous chicken pox However, it is believed the name chickenpox was commonly used in earlier centuries before doctors identified the disease.
There are chicken pox in newborns many chicken pox incubation explanations offered for the origin of the name chickenpox:
- the specks that appear looked as though chicken pox info the skin was picked by chickens;
- the disease was named after chick chicken pox shorter with vaccine peas, from a supposed similarity in size of the seed to the lesions;
- Samuel Johnson chicken pox signs suggested that the disease was "no very great danger," thus a "chicken" version of the pox;
- the term reflects a corruption of the Old English early signs chicken pox word, "giccin", which meant "itching".
As "pox" also means curse, in medieval times some believed jokes chicken pox it was a plague medical research on chicken pox vaccine brought on to curse children by the use of photos of chicken pox black magic.
During the medieval era, oatmeal was discovered to soothe the sores, and oatmeal baths are today still commonly given to relieve itching.
Japan was antibacterial soap for chicken pox among the first countries to routinely atypical chicken pox vaccinate for chickenpox. Routine vaccination against varicella zoster virus is also performed in the United augusta chicken pox book States, and the incidence of chickenpox has been dramatically babies with chicken pox reduced there (from 4 million cases per year in the pre-vaccine era to approximately 400,000 cases per year as of 2005). In can chicken pox make men sterile Europe chicken like pox rash most countries do not currently vaccinate against varicella, though the vaccine is gaining chicken pox after vaccination wider acceptance. Australia, Canada, and other countries have now adopted recommendations for routine immunization of children and susceptible adults against chickenpox. chicken pox blister picture Other countries, such as chicken pox duration Germany and the United Kingdom, have targeted recommendations for the vaccine, e.g., for susceptible health care workers at risk of varicella exposure.
Chickenpox is most chicken pox history often a mild disease, especially for children. Prior to the introduction of vaccine, there were chicken pox in toddler around 4,000,000 cases per year in the U.S., mostly children, chicken pox pregnant with typically 100 or chicken pox under an electron microscope fewer deaths. Though mostly children caught it, the majority of deaths (by as much as 80%) were among adults. Additionally, chickenpox chicken pox vaccine and nait involved the hospitalization of about 10,000 people each year.
During 2003 and the first half of 2004, the CDC heal chicken pox scars reported eight deaths from varicella, six of whom were children or adolescents. These deaths herpes chicken pox and hospitalizations have substantially declined in the U.S. due to vaccination, though the shingles + chicken pox rate of shingles infection has increased for the same reason. The vaccine has more recently been determined shingles and chicken pox to be effective at preventing shingles (zoster) the best way to transmit chicken pox in persons 60 years of age and older, if administered regularly.
The long-term duration of protection from varicella vaccine is unknown, but there can you get chicken pox twice are now persons vaccinated more than thirty years ago with no evidence cause of the chicken pox virus of waning immunity, while others have become vulnerable in as few as 6 years. chicken pox after chicken pox vaccine Assessments of duration of immunity are complicated in an environment where natural disease is still common, chicken pox and photo which typically leads to an overestimation of effectiveness, and chicken pox complication we are only now entering an era in the U.S. where the long-term efficacy of chicken pox diagnosis varicella vaccine can be accurately gauged.
The vaccine is exceedingly safe: approximately chicken pox diagram 5% of children who receive the vaccine develop a fever or chicken pox early stages rash, but there have been no deaths yet (as of 1 May 2006) attributable to the vaccine despite more than chicken pox eyes 40 million doses being administered. Cases of chicken pox fact vaccine-related chicken pox have been reported in patients with chicken pox fever a weakened immune system, but no deaths.
The literature contains chicken pox first stage several reports of adverse reactions following varicella vaccination, including vaccine-strain zoster in children chicken pox illustrations and adults. A mean of 2,350 reports per year chicken pox immunizations are attributed to varicella vaccine based on 20,004 cases reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database chicken pox in a two month old from May, 1995 through December, 2003. Minor events are known to be under-reported to VAERS.
Mortality due to primary varicella chicken pox incubation period has declined significantly in countries which make wide use of the varicella vaccine. Zoster (shingles) occurs decades after varicella and unsurprisingly zoster incidence has not declined in multiple studies. chicken pox management in children It is too early to observe the effect on postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
It has been claimed that chicken pox mouth pictures shingles may increase after introduction of chicken pox party varicella vaccine. There is yet no evidence this has chicken pox pic occurred, and it might occur in the absence of immunisation due to chicken pox prevention a general decrease in childhood infection for other reasons.
Vaccination is common in the United States, with chicken pox rash picture 41 of the 50 states require immunization for children attending government-run schools. All 50 chicken pox remedy states offer chicken pox school a medical exemption, and 48 of those states also offering philosophical and/or religious exemptions. The vaccination is not routine in the chicken pox shot United Kingdom. Debate continues in the UK on the chicken pox shots time when it will be desirable to adopt routine chickenpox vaccination, and in chicken pox vaccine journals the U.S. opinions that it should be dropped, individually, or along with all immunizations, are also voiced.
Additional controversy has arisen because cell chicken pox vaccine spread virus lines derived from aborted fetal tissue were used chicken pox wikipedia in its development, and thus violates the ethics and beliefs of people who oppose children with chicken pox the use of aborted fetal tissue in medical research.CDC
Duration of immunity
Some vaccinated children have been found to lose their protective antibody in as little as five to death by chicken pox eight years; electron microscope image of chicken pox virus however, according to the World Health Organization: "After observation of study populations for periods of up to 20 years in Japan and 10 years get chicken pox twice in the i need a picture of the virus chicken pox United States, more than 90% of immunocompetent persons who were vaccinated as children were still protected from varicella." As time goes images of chicken pox on, boosters may be determined to be images of chicken pox early stages necessary, and introduced. Persons infected after vaccine experience milder cases of chicken images on chicken pox pox.
Catching wild chickenpox as a child has panadol chicken pox doseage children weight been thought to commonly result in lifelong immunity, indeed parents have deliberately ensured this in the past with "pox pics of chicken pox parties" (and similarly for some other diseases such as rubella. See below.) Historically, exposure of adults to contagious pictures of people with chicken pox children has boosted their pitchers on chicken pox immunity, reducing the risk of shingles. Second episodes of chickenpox have been rare, but occur and probably signs + chicken + pox more frequently in the UK latterly and treatments for chicken pox definitely more frequently in the vaccine group. In one study, 30% of children had lost the antibody after five years, and 8% had already what causes chicken pox caught "wild" chickenpox in that five year period.
The CDC and corresponding national what pathogen causes the chicken pox organisations are carefully observing the failure rate which may be high compared what rashes resemble chicken pox with other modern vaccines - large outbreaks of chickenpox having occurred at schools when did scientists expect chicken pox to decline which required their children to be when was the chicken pox vaccine invented vaccinated..
The mortality rate in immunocompromised patients with disseminated herpes zoster is 3d image of chicken pox 5-15%, with most deaths from pneumonia. Vaccines, unfortunately are less effective breakthrough chicken pox among these high-risk patients, as well as being more dangerous because can you catch chicken pox twice it is an attenuated live virus (see last footnote), but clearly immunisation before immunocompromise would can you get chicken pox with the vaccanation be desirable.
A "pox party" is a party held by parents for catching chicken pox twice the purpose of infecting their children with childhood diseases. Similar ideas have applied to other diseases, e.g. measles, but causes of chicken pox are now discouraged by doctors and health services. The rationale chance of chicken pox after chicken pox vaccine behind such parties is that guests exposed to the varicella virus will contract the chicken and pox disease and develop strong and persistent immunity, at an age before disaster is likely particularly chicken incubation pox from chickenpox or rubella. chicken not pox Such parties are now less common in mainstream communities. They are essentially a revival of primitive, chicken or pox pre-vaccination attempts at inoculation.
The first reference to such a practice is chicken pox + pictures the letter of Lady Montagu to Sarah Chiswell describing the parties people in Istanbul made for the purpose of variolation - an effective technique for chicken pox and antibacterial soaps gaining immunity to smallpox, chicken pox and contagious which she imported to England.
Pox parties have been portrayed chicken pox and diet in TV cartoons, including South Park ("Chickenpox") and The Simpsons ("Milhouse of Sand and chicken pox and measles Fog").
